Early Eames DCW Chair 5-2-5 w/ Tag, Herman Miller Evans, Rosewood Walnut

Price: $2,295

I will start by saying that I am not an Eames expert. Many other people know far more than me about the history of Eames pieces like this. I have tried to research this piece as much as possible and have included what I have found below. If you have more information that you think I should include, please feel free to contact me.

This is an early DCW lounge chair by Charles and Ray Eames. It is tagged with both Herman Miller and Evans logos. The screw configuration on the bottom is 5-2-5. From what I have read, Herman Miller changed its screw configuration to 5-2-4 after their first year of production. Based on that, this is likely from Herman Miller's first year of production.

The woodgrain on this piece is absolutely incredible. I must have gone through hundreds of photos of these chairs during my research and very few come close to comparing to the unique woodgrain of this one. The previous owner was told that this is rosewood, and I have found past listings for this exact chair at reputable, well-known auction houses (including Rago) that have also listed it as being rosewood. I have also seen other rosewood examples of this model that do not have the strong reddish tones that I would normally associate with rosewood. Walnut examples that I have seen tend to be lighter with far less distinct/interesting grain patterns. Still, it is possible that both auction houses got it wrong, and this is a really amazing piece of walnut instead. In either case, this is a wonderfully gorgeous chair. Please take a look at the grain patterns for yourself.

This chair is in wonderful vintage condition. It is sturdy and useable. The only visual imperfection is a small chip in the veneer on the back edge. It is roughly 1/2" x 1/4". The rubber shock mounts are in good useable condition as shown in the photos. There appears to be some cracking on the ones under the seat. Please take a look at all of the photos to see just how beautiful this chair is.
