George Mulhauser Mr. Chair for Plycraft refinished and newly reupholstered in premium teal leather.

This is a classic mid-century lounge chair and ottoman set that has been taken to the next level with new, premium, teal leather. It was designed by George Mulhauser for Plycraft in the early 1960s. The bent plywood shell harkens to the legendary Eames lounge chair, but Mulhauser's sleek profile and striking diamond pattern are totally unique.

These chairs were originally produced in vinyl. Vinyl is thinner than leather, making it much easier to create the folded diamond pattern. To match the original design with thicker leather, our upholsterer painstakingly sewed each individual diamond shape. The result is breathtaking in person. The soft, teal leather looks amazing against the warm tones of the walnut shell. The upholstery is finished with premium foam and professionally formed buttons.

The walnut shell and bases have been refinished using danish oil. This finishing technic draws out the grain as distinct dark lines against a warm brown background. There are different versions of this design. Early versions, like this one, have beautifully cupped backs. Later versions switched to a flat back to ease manufacturing and are less desirable. The metal base of this chair is wrapped in matching bentwood (other versions only had chrome). I should also note that this is the full-sized "Mr. Chair," NOT the "Mrs. Chair," which is smaller. I am a bigger guy and have one of these chairs in my own office. I prefer the fit and stability of this chair over other lounge chairs that I have used.

This chair is in great vintage condition. The new finish and reupholstery present beautifully. This chair is over 50 years old. It may have some minor imperfections from its long life, but they are not distracting in a normal setting. The chair is structurally sound and the swivel does not wobble. Please take a look at all of the photos to see how incredible this chair is.
