Enzo Mari was born in Cerano, Italy in 1932. After attending the Brera Academy in Milan from 1952 to 1956 he began to focus his efforts on the industrial design of furniture. Mari believed that a designer's job was not only to create beautiful and functional aesthetically pleasing furniture, but also to choose materials and utilize new technologies efficiently.
Mari began presenting his furniture to manufacturer's starting in 1957. His first project, the Putrella Tray was presented to Danese, a furniture manufacturer in Milan. The tray became one of his most famous designs, made from a piece of steel construction beam. Other famous designs by Mari include the 'In Atessa' paper bin, the Sof-Sof chair, the Delfina chair, the Tonietta chair, the Legato table, and the Mariolina chair.
Enzo also authored several books and is considered one of the best design theoriticians of the 20th century. He taught at many schools, coordinated and participated in many exhibitions, and has won many awards for his designs including the Royal Designers for Industry Award, the Laurea Honoris Causa by the Faculty of Architecture in Milan, and 5 Compasso d'Oro Awards, the most prestigious award that exists for industrial design.
